CABLE SEALS
While standard bulkhead connectors have their uses, they are rarely the best solution for a hermetic feedthrough. A custom hermetically sealed cable seal offers several benefits over off-the-shelf connectors including flexibility, cost savings, space savings, reduced electrical problems, and a longer life.
It may seem illogical, but custom cable seals can be a cost-effective solution by replacing harnesses, improving performance, reducing maintenance, and eliminating over-engineering to make a standard seal work.
RHSeals designs and ships custom hermetically sealed cable feedthroughs with a short lead time and an emphasis on quality and customer service. Learn more about the benefits of choosing RHSeals custom hermetic cable seals for your project.
BENEFITS OF HERMETIC CABLE SEALS
Bulkhead cable connectors are typically used to route power & data through the walls of pressure and vacuum chambers. While a bulkhead connector seal offers an off-the-shelf solution to pass cables through bulkheads and panels, they come with several drawbacks. Standard seals can increase electrical issues and costs, and they also come with design constraints.
RHSeals cable feedthroughs come with the same advantages as our wire feedthroughs.
GREATER DESIGN FLEXIBILITY
Our cable seals are hermetically sealed with epoxy and offer a flexible and robust solution that saves space and works within the confines of your project. While standard bulkhead seals have precise guidelines for the number of conductors and wire gauge, a custom cable seal can be made to your exact specifications, even with multiple cables of different sizes.
An off-the-shelf product is almost never the best fit for a specific task. This forces engineers to compromise or over-engineer the design to accommodate the limitations of the product. A continuous cable feedthrough can be made to the precise specifications of your project.
A continuous cable feedthrough can also be retrofitted for an older system. Adding new sensors or instruments to an existing chamber can be a difficult and long process with standard seals — assuming the chamber wall’s opening allows for it. Our custom cable seals can be easily adapted to increase conductors within the limits of your existing system.
FEWER ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS
One of the primary advantages of a custom cable seal is superior performance. A hermetically sealed feedthrough passes a cable through a chamber wall without pressure or vacuum loss, eliminating common electrical problems like contact resistance and voltage drop that occur with standard bulkheads. A cable can be passed through uninterrupted. The conductor is continuous through the cable seal without solder terminations, so the cable seal offers reliable performance.
SHORT LEAD TIME
It’s a common assumption that custom cable seals automatically mean long lead times. While there is a longer wait for a custom product, an epoxy hermetically sealed cable feedthrough doesn’t need to be a long lead product. RHSeals ships custom cable seals with shorter lead times than most competitors. We also offer a selection of Quick Delivery items. Our catalog includes hundreds of cable seals, but we can also design a robust solution that can be assembled quickly to your specifications.
SAVES SPACE
Continuous cable seals tend to save space over off-the-shelf bulkhead seals, potentially doubling the amount of conductors in any given opening in a panel or chamber wall. A single feedthrough can combine cables from numerous bulkhead connectors; this eliminates protruding parts, which allows clearance for any moving components.
LONGER LIFE
A cable feedthrough has a significantly longer life than a standard connector because it isn’t subjected to wear and tear. A connector is repeatedly connected and disconnected which reduces its lifespan. Our cable seals eliminate the wear cycle for a robust seal with a long life.
LOWER COST
It seems logical for an off-the-shelf solution to be the most economical decision, but it usually isn’t. To decide whether a custom cable seal is the right choice, consider the total installed cost for each product. A single feedthrough with one harness can replace several standard connectors and harnesses. This alone can be achieved by reducing the number of harnesses that must be designed, manufactured, and installed in your system.
Opting for cable seals can also lower your bill-of-materials and eliminate the expense of engineering a system around standard products that don’t match your application specifications.
As a general rule, replacing one glass-to-metal connector with an epoxy sealed cable feedthrough can save around 50%. The more connectors you replace, the more significant your savings will be.
THE RHSEALS DIFFERENCE
RHSeals designs and produces cable seals for every industry from medical facilities and labs to airport equipment. Every seal we manufacture goes through a rigorous test process, including pressure leak tests, helium testing, high voltage testing, and/or continuity testing. This ensures every seal we ship is robust.
We seal all types of cables, including coaxial, twisted pair, multiconductor, fiber optic, shielded cables, and even multiple shields like HDMI and triax cables. If you need a custom vacuum cable seal, we offer flexible, cost-effective designs manufactured to the exact specifications of your project.
Epoxy sealed cable feedthroughs aren’t necessarily long-lead products. We normally ship our custom cable seals with shorter lead times than competitors and we have a large selection of Quick Delivery items. If our catalog doesn’t have just what you’re looking for, contact our engineering team to design a robust and cost-effective feedthrough that can be manufactured and shipped quickly.
